The Toyota Stout Light Pickup Render: A Tacoma

Jun 18, 2023

A light Toyota lifestyle pickup below the 2024 Toyota Tacoma with a rugged drivetrain would conquer its rivals - here's a speculative HotCars render.

Pickups make up the top-selling vehicles in the US, and of course the Ford F-Series was the best-selling vehicle model over the last few decades.

We love a truck, and like categories of coffee drinks, there's something for everyone and every taste. Rising demand for SUVs and trucks as lifestyle vehicles and the popularity of Toyota's all-conquering Toyota Tacoma means that a light pickup like the Ford Maverick was only a question of when.

There's a good case for the Toyota Stout to make a comeback in the face of popular competition like the Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz – the Stout is a light truck that can trace its lineage back to 1964 and production ended by 2020. Here's an exclusive render courtesy of HotCars artist Timothy Adry Emmanuel that speculates on how the 2024 Toyota Stout could look.

As we already reported, Toyota said that it's possible a new light unibody pickup could be coming, and with the modular TNGF architecture underpinning many of its models and small, powerful new engines the Stout could be here within a year or two.

Stout, aside from being a dark-fermented alcoholic drink like Guinness, also means short and stocky, or strong. This render shows a small pickup like the Ford Maverick but with an obvious Toyota theme. It is blockier than the previous-generation Toyota Tacoma and more in line with the 2024 model, though the front is distinct.

LED-framed headlamps carry inspiration from the previous Tacoma and Toyota Hilux; the aggressive aluminum front bumper includes LED lights and there is an interesting and original narrow grille in the center. It seems to be a pure EV judging from the air intakes and lack of exhausts up back rather than a hybrid, especially as the TRD Pro would normally come sporting exhausts up back.

A simple design with large off-roading tires and rims from the 2024 Toyota Tacoma makes this Toyota Stout look tough, thanks partly to its wide, blocky body shape. Squared-off wheel arches, a large back bumper and rear lights inspired by the Toyota Tacoma and Toyota Hilux finish off this simple design.

The render shows off an extended cab and crew cab variant. If the Toyota Stout came to market, it would likely include the Toyota Tacoma's entry-level 2.4-liter, 228-hp 4-cylinder engine.

TRD Pro trims like the one in this render would come with beefier suspension, off-road tires and drivetrain features for tackling different surfaces and gradients.

In comparison, the 2023 Ford Maverick comes with a 2.5-liter, hybrid setup with 191 hp. If Toyota brought the Stout to market with the iForce hybrid it would offer 278 hp, which also seems likely, and would give the Stout the upper hand against the Maverick which tops out at 250 hp with its optional 2-liter turbocharged engine.
