A multi-vehicle crash caused by a speeding car shut down the eastbound lanes of Interstate 696 at Van Dyke in Center Line for several hours Tuesday evening.

The incident was reported around 6:20 p.m., Michigan State Police said in a statement on Twitter.

Troopers from MSP's Metro North post responded to the scene, according to the tweet. Center Line police also were at the crash site.

The eastbound lanes were blocked for hours but reopened around 9 p.m., the Michigan Department of Transportation reported.

According to a preliminary investigation, the driver of a Honda sedan was speeding when he rear-ended a Dodge Challenger in the right lane. The Honda spun to the left and struck a Ford F-150 pickup truck before it was rear-ended by another truck in the left lane, officials said.

Meanwhile, the F-150 rear-ended another vehicle which fled the scene.

Police said the Honda's driver, a 32-year-old Warren man, was seriously injured and was taken to a hospital. The Dodge's driver was also taken to a hospital but with minor injuries.
