Semitrailer Accident Unleashes Pigs on St. Paul Highway: A Bizarre and Chaotic Scene

May 27, 2023

A semitrailer truck carrying 50 hogs overturned on Minnesota's Interstate 694 recently. The accident resulted in an hours-long traffic shutdown on Friday morning. Cameras showed several loose pigs running through the streets as state troopers tried to corral them.

According to the Star Tribune, the truck tipped over at approximately 7:35 a.m., backing up morning rush hour traffic for over a mile. Although the truck driver did not sustain any injuries, ten pigs died in the crash. Some of the pigs that escaped were reported to be injured.

Authorities rounded up the escaped pigs, some of which had injuries. Investigators are looking into the cause of the semi-truck's overturn as it navigated the curve on I-694, joining with northbound Interstate 35E.

Similar incidents have happened before. Five years ago near Mankato, over 20 pigs spilled onto roads after a semitruck overturned at a highway interchange. That truck was carrying 90 pigs, with some of them dying. The driver suffered only minor injuries.

In a more extreme case, last year on a Pennsylvania highway, a truck carrying a trailer of 100 monkeys collided with a dump truck, spilling several monkeys onto the road. The truck had been on its way to a lab, but both drivers came out unharmed.

Accidents like these are a rare occurrence, and it's essential to practice safety on the roads to avoid these situations altogether.

In conclusion, the recent accident on Minnesota's I-694 was a sight to see. Although pigs running through traffic were relatively amusing, it is vital to note that these incidents are often deadly for the animals in the truck and on the road. We hope authorities can take preventative measures to avoid these accidents from happening again.
