GARDEN CITY — An out of control semi-truck slammed into multiple condominium garage units west of Bear Lake. The accident happened around 7 p.m. Friday, near the intersection between US-89 and Bear Lake Boulevard.

Utah Highway Patrol trooper Eddie Wright said the semi-truck was northbound along US-89 when it reportedly lost its brakes. The truck was unable to turn at the intersection with Bear Lake Boulevard, crashing through the garages.

According to emergency crews, a 100-gallon propane tank was also hit forcing evacuations of homes and businesses nearby.

Fire fighters and paramedics extricated the female passenger from the truck. She was flown by medical helicopter to a hospital in critical condition. The female driver was transported by ambulance to a hospital in stable condition.

Wright said the identities of the women will be released on Monday, pending notification of family.

Photos from the scene showed extensive damaged caused from the crash.

Wright said no one else was injured during the crash and impairment was not suspected.

The accident occurred at the same intersection that has a history of damaging crashes and fatal accidents.

In 2020, a $5 million ramp project was completed where the highway comes into Garden City to prevent runaway trucks. It however has yet to be used reportedly.
